What is maternal mental health?

Maternal mental health (sometimes called reproductive mental health) encompasses the psychological, emotional and behavioral health of a woman in her childbearing and child rearing years.  That means any challenges a woman may face while trying to get pregnant, during pregnancy, postpartum, or any time thereafter while raising her children fall into this category.

The issues that I most often work with that fall under this umbrella include:

  • Infertility

  • Miscarriage and termination

  • Infant loss

  • Mood changes in pregnancy

  • Postpartum depression and anxiety

  • Parenting
